Calving Season is underway!

The spring feeling in the air is definitely being felt on the farm as the first of this year’s calves have been born.

We are slightly later starting than usual, as last year we made the decision to not put the bulls in with the cows a few weeks later than usual. I’m not sure if you remember but March last year was an absolute wash out and we struggled with space in the calving sheds as we delayed putting newborn babies out in the rain.

So the thought process was have the cows calve a little later in the hope of better weather and of course this year March has been the driest in years. The perfect weather for calving. But that in reality is farming in a nutshell, nobody can control mother nature – she knows best!

This year we are expecting 60 shorthorn calves all of which are by our lovely shorthorn bulls Rocky and Logic. Rocky The Rockstar was a new bull to us last year so we can’t wait to meet his offspring and see what he adds to our herd.

Shorthorns as a native breed are reknowned for being wonderful mothers who ‘generally’ have small but lively calves. The cows are all looking wonderful and in just the right shape for calving.

Let’s hope this glorious weather continues and we can get everyone out in the fields as soon as possible. It certainly feels like the end of winter housing is in sight as the spring grass is starting to grow.
